Whiti Te Rā v. St George’s Dragons

I’ve written before about trying to avoid the traps, not focusing on the sentimental or the obvious. With my local Rugby League team, images presented themselves last Saturday which looked to fit the story, and I made my way around the pitch to get a closer look. Really animated, encroaching onto the pitch, and aggressively supporting his side, I thought his picture would work well with other images of the game itself. But using this picture would speak of the obvious, and the violence of the game does not equate to the violence of some of the watching crowd. Using an image like this would say nothing of the skill, bravery and kinship which are the qualities that interest me the most in this game.

So lurking somewhere in my computer waiting for the right time and context are some pretty cool images of young men supporting their sports team. They’ll come out someday, no doubt, but not now.
