The Past Simple v. Used to + infinitive

So when can I say did, and when can I say used to did?

Well that’s not a brilliant example to be honest, but did would be for something in the past which you happened once, and is a completed action. You would use used to for something in the past which was a recurring action or a habit. Like, I lived in China, and I used to smoke all day long.

(China again, those years in China)

We’ve been having these conversations this week in class. And then I thought about this in terms of some photographs I remember making with my wife, before she was my wife. The weight of the memories would suggest these were a used to type of event. But then I think in reality they were a past simple. Can they become a used to if I look at them more? Or if other people look at them more?
